Should My Lung Cancer Have Been Detected?
The overwhelming majority of lung cancer cases develop in people who are smokers. Therefore, any time a smoker, particularly one over the age of 40, develops symptoms such as shortness of breath or a persistent cough, the doctor has to immediately order chest X-rays or other imaging studies. Unfortunately, that doesn't always happen.
Even if a smoker has no symptoms, it is important that they have regular chest x-rays, and if there's anything suspicious on the film, the doctor should order a more sophisticated picture of the lung, such as a CT scan. CT scans are becoming much better in their ability to detect abnormal modules in the lung, even some of them smaller than a half-inch in size. Once detected, treatment for lung cancer can range from a minimally-invasive procedure for removal of just the tumor to major surgery involving removal of the entire lung. As with all cancers, the sooner it is found, the more likely the patient is to survive.
Not surprisingly, some people "blame the patient" who develops lung cancer since it is usually related to cigarette smoking. However, when we handle these cases, what we emphasize is this: The doctor didn't cause the cancer, but it is his or her job to detect it and treat it.
