Meet Our Lawyers
John P. Gismondi is one of Pennsylvania's best-known personal injury trial attorneys. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and spending a few years as a law clerk in federal court, he began private practice in Pittsburgh in 1981 and made an immediate impact as a personal injury attorney. Within one week of entering practice, Mr. Gismondi tried a 4-day jury trial by himself and won! This is almost unprecedented for a young lawyer to do, but it was an indication of the skill he possessed as a trial attorney ... someone who was a "natural" in the courtroom. In his first full year as a personal injury attorney, Mr. Gismondi tried a total of 9 jury trials to verdict. In the more than 25 years that followed, he has gone on to try many, many cases and has never sat in as "second chair" in the courtroom.
No doubt it was his reputation as a true trial attorney that led to him being the youngest person ever selected to teach Trial Advocacy at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He is now in his 25th year of teaching courtroom skills to aspiring trial attorneys.
Mr. Gismondi was also one of the youngest lawyers ever elected by his peers as President of the Allegheny County Bar Association, a top achievement considering that this group is made up of over 7,000 attorneys. It is also believed that Mr. Gismondi is one of the youngest lawyers in Pennsylvania to ever receive an AV National Rating, the highest distinction available under Martindale-Hubbell's national rating system for lawyers.
Mr. Gismondi is among the state's best-known speakers at conferences and seminars designed to teach other lawyers about personal injury law. He has been invited to speak at nearly 200 such events throughout Pennsylvania and he has written numerous articles on personal injury subjects.
In additional to his full-time law practice, Mr. Gismondi is actively involved at his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. As noted above, since 1985 he has taught a weekly course entitled Trial Advocacy. In recognition of his outstanding work in the field, the law school in 2004 established the "John P. Gismondi Civil Litigation Certificate Program," a unique curriculum designed to provide special training for law students who wish to become courtroom attorneys. In 2008, the Law School named Mr. Gismondi as the recipient of its "Distinguished Alumnus" award.
