A pulmonary embolism is almost always caused by a blood clot (known as a deep vein thrombus) that forms in the leg. The medical condition becomes life-threatening when the clot breaks free and travels to the main pulmonary artery in the lung or one of its branches.
The people most commonly at risk for DVT are those who have "thick" blood which tends to clot, people who have suffered severe trauma to one of their legs, or people who have recently undergone surgery on their abdomen or legs. Doctors can use special tests such as ultrasound to see if a patient has clots in their leg. If so, blood-thinning drugs such as Heparin can be given to dissolve the clot. If the clot has already broken free and traveled to the lung, it may be discovered on a pulmonary angiogram, and if that is the case, surgery might have to be done to extract the clot. Either way, it is absolutely vital that the medical staff move quickly to detect clots in the leg or lung and properly treat them.
Symptoms of a pulmonary embolism include shortness of breath, redness, swelling or pain in one leg or chest pain. You may also experience shortness of breath from mini clots that have traveled from the leg to the lung before the big one.
To diagnose pulmonary embolism, doctors should ask about your medical history to determine your risk factors for blood clots forming in your leg, and they also must watch carefully for signs such as leg pain or shortness of breath.
